Full Question: Why is self-regulation strategies and meta-cognitive strategies placed under "acquiring deep learning\"? I would expect self-regulation and metacognition to be a category on its own that helps the learner identify the relevant phase of learning and to pick and monitor the use of a learning strategy, such as underlining or help seeking.

Answer: “Yes, but I don’t completely agree. The problem with deeper strategies is they are self-reinforcing. So, it is a kind of double whammy, asking students to monitor while developing the monitoring skills. We also did not want a separate category about these critical attributes and they seemed to fit with the notion of having some deeper processing – yes to go back and forward from surface to deep to surface. But I can see your point” (John Hattie, personal communication, January 26, 2019).
