Full Question: An article I read mentioned that you argue a growth mind-set is not beneficial in every situation, as it can even hinder learning. Therefore, I am reaching out to you. I'd like to pick your brain, and was wondering if you could lead me in the direction to where I can find articles that substantiate your view on growth mind-set.

Answer: “As Carol Dweck comments – growth and fixed mindsets are not attributes of people – they are skills that can be invoked as enablers or barriers to growth. All of us move between these two. A key is the times to invoke a growth mindset – for example at times of struggle, error, misconception etc. If I ask you to walk through a wall I hope you invoke a fixed mindset. Criminals have remarkable high levels of using growth mindsets. If a student is using a wrong strategy then continuing to use it in the belief of not yet, I can do it, etc. then this is not good strategy. A more appropriate strategy is to ask for help, to ask for alternative strategies. So many programs provide growth mindset, but they do NOT relate it to the right moments when we should be invoking this mindset – which is why most meta-analyses of growth programs show very low impact – as Carol has continually claimed – we must help people know the trigger points to invoke a growth or fixed mindset and her next paper on evaluating her new program in Seattle should show this clearly” (John Hattie, personal communication, January 11, 2019).
