“Focus continually on what you mean by impact and evidence you will seek to understand and defend your expectations of impact; make sure impact is not only about achievement but also about the love of learning by the students in the class; seek collaborations to have debates about this impact. Yes, the first few years are tough as you have to think about everything (later you will overlearn some aspects so as to have working memory to apply to other tasks) so share, share, and share. It is a pity there is no organization, no conference, and too little induction to help teachers navigate the first 1-3 years – they are the hardest but when you survive them you will have every opportunity to truly join a wonderful profession and enhance so many students lives. Of course, the students in your first three years can be the most to gain – while you continually question your impact, worry about their learning, and are so hungry to improve” (John Hattie, personal communication, August 19, 2018).
