“An extract from a letter I sent to Mr Tomlinson...’High school was not about my most treasured memories. There were many aspects that do not bring back great memories, but there were highlights. It was wonderful, in retrospect, that we had a limited number of options – and making us stay in Mathematics was one. I was ok and probably, if I had a choice, would have stopped doing it after SC. It was in your class that it suddenly came together. That was the moment when all that rote learning began to make sense. I recall, in particular, that it was fun to work out angles in geometry questions, calculus I could see (movement and space), and algebra was always a favourite. It was your proficiency to make it all sense and have fun doing it. You spared us no secrets as to the amount of work we would have to do to master the level required, but your passionate love of your subject and enjoyment when we dummies got it. It was a no penalty class provided you put in the effort and listened’” (John Hattie, personal communication, April 5, 2016).
