The main message is that teachers feel they are doing the major work (although I note they are the only ones paid to do work in a class!). I would advocate for ‘student assessment capabilities’ and we recently released a book about this. This aims to put the onus on students to be more aware of their progress, current status, and future direction; to interpret the assessment information to help better ‘where to next’ – but it does put pressure on teachers to teach the students how to do this – so then it becomes more of a partnership. Yes, it is the ownership – a powerful way is to have a class meeting about this – relay the teacher’s concerns, how they would improve the system, what is in it for them to do well and grow – I bet they have strong views as they are certainly having strong behaviours” (John Hattie, personal communication, March 23, 2018).
