What factors (both external and internal) do you think contribute to the lack of efficiency in study habits acquired in high school when students enter university?
Answer: The major problem is that teaching study skills is much more successful when embedding them in the subject content and not separate study skills courses, where the transfer is low. Our problem-solving and making relations are very dependent on the content; hence, we merge into a course and do not separate. Also, the study strategies differ in their effectiveness depending on whether the focus is the knowledge or the depth of knowing (and both not either is critical). Our model of strategies shows that various strategies work differentially – and the most complex skill is for students to know WHEN to use a particular strategy best. So often, students have a set of strategies that they apply regardless of the context.
